Get ready to impress your taste buds (and your family members) and save some money by learning how to make a coffee shop level white mocha at home.

Gathering the Necessary Ingredients

If you want to make a delicious white mocha at home, the first step is to gather all the necessary ingredients. Don't worry, you don't need any fancy or hard-to-find items. In fact, you probably already have most of these items in your kitchen.

To start, you'll need a way to make espresso. If you have an espresso machine, great! You can use that to make a perfect double shot of espresso. If you don't have an espresso machine, you can use a Nespresso machine, an Aeropress, a Moka pot or instant espresso powder.

See my full list of all my recommended espresso machines and makers HERE.

The next thing you’ll need is coffee. If you own an espresso machine, a Moka pot, or an aeropress, you will need coffee beans or coffee grounds. Personally, I like to grind my coffee beans fresh before every extraction, but the best option is always whatever you prefer, and whatever works best for your household.

For Nespresso users, make sure you have your favorite espresso pods on hand. If you use instant espresso, you will need instant espresso packets or a jar of the powder.

Next, you will need water to make the espresso. I recommend using bottled water, purified water, or filtered water rather than tap water. The amount of water will depend on which espresso process you are using.

Next, you'll need white chocolate sauce. My personal favorite white chocolate sauce is from Torani, which you can find at most grocery stores in the coffee aisle, or order online at Torani.com. The white chocolate sauce adds that rich, creamy flavor that we all love in a white mocha. Note, for a traditional white mocha, you need white chocolate sauce, not white chocolate syrup. You can absolutely use the syrup version, it will just lack the creaminess and richness that comes with the sauce. If you prefer a homemade sauce, option, that is great too. You’ll need white chocolate chips or bark, half and half, and unsalted butter. The full recipe for a homemade sauce will come later in this post

Next, you'll need milk. You can use any type of milk you prefer - whole milk, 2%, 1%, goat milk, almond milk, soy milk - it's up to you. Just make sure it's cold, as you'll be steaming or frothing it later for a hot white mocha, or combining it with ice for an iced white mocha.

If you are making an iced white mocha, you will need ice. No ice is needed for a hot version.

Finally, you’ll need whipped cream. You can buy store bought containers at the grocery store or you can make your own homemade whipped cream with a professional whipped cream dispenser, heavy whipping cream, and vanilla syrup. Other additional toppings you could add include caramel sauce, chocolate sauce, cocoa powder, cinnamon, or homemade cold foam.

Once you have all of these ingredients, you're ready to move on to the next step - preparing the white chocolate sauce.

Preparing the White Chocolate Sauce

Now that your ingredients are is ready, it's time to prepare the white chocolate mixture that will give your white mocha its signature creamy flavor. Note, you can completely skip this step if you are using a store bought sauce like the Torani White Chocolate Sauce.

Start by heating up 1/2 cup half and half in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring the half and half to a slight boil and remove the pan from the heat.

Once the half and half is off the heat, add your 8 ounces of white chocolate chips or bark to the half and half, and stir vigorously until the chocolate is fully melted, and the mixture is smooth.

Once the half and half and white chocolate is fully combined, add in your 2 teaspoons of butter. Stir until the butter is fully melted and incorporated into the mixture. This step is crucial for creating that luxurious and indulgent white mocha texture.

Pour your white chocolate sauce into a mason jar or an airtight container to be used in your homemade white mochas. This homemade white chocolate sauce will stay good in the fridge for up to two weeks. Note, the sauce will thicken in the fridge.

Congratulations! You've successfully prepared the white chocolate sauce for your homemade white mocha. Now it's time to combine it with your espresso and milk, and garnish it with whipped cream.

Get ready to enjoy the deliciousness of a Starbucks-quality white mocha from the comfort of your own home. It's the perfect way to start your day or indulge in a little treat whenever you need a pick-me-up. So grab your white chocolate sauce, your favorite coffee cup, and let's move on to the next step!

The Espresso Brewing Process

It's now time to dive into the espresso brewing process. This step is crucial in creating the perfect white mocha, as it forms the base of the drink.

Many recipes on the internet say you can use espresso or strongly brewed coffee, and while I understand the thought process behind this, I very much recommend finding a way to make espresso for your favorite espresso based drinks. Using strongly brewed coffee will give a similar vibe to a traditional white mocha, but I guarantee it’ll leave you feeling like something is off or missing.

My goal with the step-by-step guide is to help you most accurately recreate a perfect white mocha at home, so I strongly suggest using espresso over brewed coffee. I promise this will make all the difference, and it will help you to finally enjoy your at home coffee without missing Starbucks one bit.

If you have an espresso machine, lucky you! Simply make sure it's clean and ready to use. Fill the portafilter with your favorite coffee grounds and tamp down evenly. Place the portafilter into the machine and start the brewing process. As the rich aroma fills your kitchen, you'll feel like a professional barista in your own home.

See my step by step video tutorial for how I brew espresso shots using my Breville Barista Express Espresso Machine HERE.

But what if you don't have an espresso machine? Don't worry, you can still enjoy a fabulous white mocha at home. See the following video examples for how to make espresso at home without an espresso machine:

No matter which method you choose, you're one step closer to enjoying a coffee shop-quality white mocha at home. In the next section, we'll explore how to steam milk for a hot white mocha. Stay tuned and get ready to take your coffee game to the next level!

The Milk Steaming Process

For a hot version of a white mocha, you will need steamed milk. If you have an espresso machine with a steam wand, simply add cold milk to a jug, insert the steam wand into the jug, and steam the milk. See my step-by-step video tutorial for using a steam wand HERE.

Don’t worry if you don’t have an espresso machine with a steam wand. You can still get perfectly steamed milk for hot white mochas and other hot espresso based drinks without a steam wand. All you need is milk, a microwave safe cup or mug, and a handheld milk frother.

Start by adding cold milk to the microwave safe cup or mug, and microwave the milk for 50-60 seconds. The milk should be warm, not scalding.

Next, place the milk frother inside the warmed milk, and begin frothing the milk. Move the frother in circular motions to create lots of foam and bubbles. Froth the milk for 60-90 seconds, and then remove the frother from the milk. You should have a cup of warm, frothy milk, perfect for a hot white mocha.

Note, for an iced white mocha, you do not need to warm or steam the milk. Simply skip this step, and use cold milk straight from the fridge.

Combining and Garnishing your Hot White Mocha

Now that you have your perfectly brewed espresso, your delicious white chocolate sauce (store-bought or homemade), and your steamed milk, it's time to combine and garnish your hot white mocha.

Start by pouring the white chocolate sauce into your favorite coffee cup.

Next, pour your brewed espresso into the cup, and mix with a spoon until the espresso and white chocolate sauce are combined.

Next, slowly pour the steamed milk into the cup, being sure to leave some room at the top for any additional toppings you may want to add.

Now it's time for the fun part - garnishing your white mocha! You can get as creative as you want with this step. Some popular options include whipped cream, a drizzle of caramel sauce or chocolate syrup, or a sprinkle of cocoa powder.

Once you've added your desired toppings, your white mocha is ready to be enjoyed. So go ahead, take a sip, and savor the deliciousness of a Starbucks-quality white mocha in the comfort of your own home. Enjoy every sip and be proud of your barista skills!

Creating the Iced Version

If you're looking for a refreshing twist on a traditional white mocha, creating an iced version is the way to go. Perfect for those hot summer days or when you're just craving a chilled beverage, an iced white mocha is the perfect indulgence. Luckily, making an iced white mocha at home is just as easy as making a hot one, if not easier.

To create the iced version, start by brewing your espresso as usual.

Next, it's time to add the white chocolate sauce (store-bought or homemade) to your favorite glass or cup. After the white chocolate sauce, pour in your brewed espresso, stirring gently to dissolve the sauce.

Next, add cold milk to the cup, followed by your desired amount of ice, and stir well with a spoon or straw to combine all the ingredients and to cool the white mocha.

To garnish your iced white mocha, add whipped cream on top. If you’re feeling fancy, you can add a drizzle of caramel sauce to the top. For an extra special touch, you can even make your favorite flavored cold foam to add to the top. The possibilities are endless when it comes to garnishing your iced white mocha, so don't be afraid to get creative.

Once your iced white mocha is ready, take a sip, and savor all the deliciousness of your homemade iced white mocha. Cheers to enjoying the coffee shop experience right at home!

Final Thoughts and Tips for Perfect White Mocha

So there you have it, a step-by-step guide to making a delicious hot or iced white mocha at home. By now, you should be well on your way to becoming a master barista in your own kitchen. But before you go off to enjoy your homemade creation, here are a few final thoughts and tips to ensure that your white mocha is absolutely perfect.

First and foremost, remember that the quality of your ingredients makes a difference. If possible, try to use high-quality, fresh espresso or coffee beans for the best flavor. My personal favorite beans are the Laka Java Wahine Espresso Roast beans (use code: KATERINAFAITH for 10% off) and the Press Coffee Twitch Espresso Roast beans. Additionally, make sure to use a good quality white chocolate sauce, such as the Torani brand, or make your own homemade white chocolate sauce to achieve that creamy and indulgent taste that you love from Starbucks or your favorite local coffee shop.

Another important tip is to experiment with different milk options. While whole milk is traditionally used in a white mocha, you can also try using alternative milks like almond milk or soy milk depending on your personal preference or dietary needs. Don't be afraid to test different options so you can find the milk that suits your taste preferences best.

Lastly, don't forget to garnish your white mocha to make it extra special. Whipped cream, caramel sauce, salted caramel cold foam, or even a sprinkle of cocoa powder can take your homemade white mocha to the next level. Have fun and get creative with your garnishes!

Now that you know all the tips and tricks, it's time to grab your coffee cup and start brewing. Whether you're in the mood for a hot or iced white mocha, you can now enjoy the indulgent flavors of a coffee shop level drink without ever having to leave the house. So go ahead, treat yourself to a homemade white mocha, and savor every sip of the creamy goodness.
